      This one-day symposium will identify and propose solutions to key issues that will support an improved built environment for physical activity in New York State.  The emphasis will be on infrastructure for walking and bicycling activities – and overcoming obstacles to the implementation of these facilities.  The topics being included are:

 

  1.  Safe Routes to School: Changing the Definition of Safety Zones
  2.  Health as a Performance Measure of Transportation Planning 
  3.  Update of the 1997 NYS Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan
  4.  Signing Bicycle Club Routes on Existing Roadways
  5.  Main Street Design Guidelines
  6.  Ryan’s Law: Proposed Safety Legislation
  7.  Local Zoning and Planning Solutions for Physical Activity
  8.  Creating a ‘Positive’ Environmental Review Process
  9.  Site Plan Guidelines for Senior Housing
  10.  Implementing Health Impact Assessments

 

Date, Time, and Overview:

            The symposium will take place on Friday, March 18, 2005.  It will run from 9 am to 4 pm.  The agenda for the symposium consists of a morning session of working in the individual topic groups and then a break for lunch, which will be catered by Claytons Caribbean restaurant.  The afternoon session will involve group presentations accompanied by a question and answer session.

Registration Fee:

            This event is free to everyone, practitioners and students alike.  We are providing a catered lunch along with beverages and snacks throughout the day.  Parking permits will also be supplied.
